GRE單字整理1.

abandon
拆字法則:ad(to~)+bandon(ban) = a·ban·don
v. 放棄、屏棄(give up;desert)






  • If you abandon a place, thing, or person, you leave the place, thing, or person permanently or for a long time, especially when you should not do so.

  • If you abandon an activity or piece of work, you stop doing it before it is finished.

  • If you abandon an idea or way of thinking, you stop having that idea or thinking in that way.
n. 放任、放縱


Example: The captain ordered to abandon ship.







abase
拆字法則:ad(to~)+base(law) = a·base
v.to act in a way that shows that you accept somebody's power over you 表現卑微、屈從


Example: She didn't intend to abase herself in public.


abash=embarrass
拆字法則:ad+bash=a·bash
v.embarrass


Example: He was not abashed by her blunt refusal.


abate
拆字法則:ad+bate(少)=a·bate
v. to become less strong, or make something less strong, means weaken something.


Example: The storm began to abate at night.


abbreviate
拆字法則:a+b+brev(short)+i+ate(verb)=ab·bre·vi·ate
v.縮寫某個字、名子、名稱 or To make something short.


PS: breviate n. 摘記 brief a.精簡的、簡短的  brevity n.


Example: The class was abbreviated due to power failure.


abdicate
拆字法則:ab(away)+dic(say)+ate=ab·di·cate
v. to give up the position of being king or queen
v. to fail or refuse to perform a duty


Example: The king was forced to abdicate his throne(王座).


aberrant
拆字法則:ab(way)+err(wander->wrong)+ant(adj or people) 有兩種念法 1.'a·be·rrant 2.ab·err·'ant
1. adj. not usually or not socially acceptable, depart from the right, normal or usually course.
2. none. an aberrant person, thing, group, etc.


Example: He apologized for his aberrant behavior.


abet
拆字法則:a(=ad=to~)+bet(bait)=a·bet
1. v. to encourage somebody to do something wrong.


Example: Who abetted you in stealing her jewelry.


abeyance
拆字法則:a(ad=to)+bey(bay)+ance(none)=a·bey·ance
v. temporary suspension, stop for a period of time.


Example: The negotiation has been in abeyance for a week.


abhor
拆字法則:ab(away)+hor(tremble, shudder)=ab·hor
v. to hate something very much, especially for moral reason. 厭惡、憎恨


Example: The abhor dark colors.


abject
拆字法則:ab(away)+ject(throw)=ab·ject
adj. very very poor, extremely bad, terrible and without hope 悲慘的、絕望的
adj. 下賤的、自卑的


ps:
project=pro(forward of support)+ject(throw)計畫、發送、投擲
reject=re(again and again)+ject(throw) 拒絕


Example: During depression many people live in abject conditions.


abjure
拆字法則:ab(away)+jure(to swear, relation to "law")=ab·jure
v. to renounce, repudiate or retract, especially with formal solemnity, recant


ps: jury n.陪審團 perjure n.偽證
Example: He retract his earlier statement about his religion; he abjure his beliefs
